Digital Whack a Mole

This is the arcade Whac-A-Mole brought up to date. Two players stand at the cabinet, LED targets light up at random across the deck, and you race your opponent to hit them with a foam hammer before they go dark. Every hit registers on the digital scoreboard, a round runs about thirty seconds, and the winner shows at the end. There are no mechanical moles on a motor to jam or wear out, so it holds up well through a long day on a busy stand.

The unit is made in the UK by Game Works Creative and runs on their IPS (Interactive Play System) - the same target technology as our IPS Podium Challenge. It's a compact freestanding cabinet, around 1.22m wide and 0.69m deep, with built-in speakers, a colour-changing LED strip round the rim and a battery that tops up in the background so it isn't tied to the wall all day. It runs from a single 13A socket.

You'll see it called digital whack a mole, electronic whack a mole, or just a 1v1 reaction game - it's the same thing.

Branding it for your stand

The cabinet panels lift off and go back on with your own artwork, so the whole thing can be wrapped in a campaign rather than left in the standard mole livery. The front, sides and back all take a printed wrap.

We've run it as Specsavers' Bright Stars Scholarship and Careers in Optometry game at schools and university careers fairs, with a "test your vision and reaction" header and a QR code on the front. We've dressed it in Collect+ orange for a parcels activation that toured shopping centres and campuses, and built it into a Perfectly Clear flavoured-water stand. All the panels are printed and fitted by our in-house team before delivery and taken off again afterwards. There's more on our branding service.

A queue-grabber at careers fairs

The reaction format does a particular job on a careers or freshers stand. It pulls a student in for a thirty-second go, and that half a minute is long enough for one of your team to start a conversation while they play. We've been the game on the Specsavers careers stand for a run of their schools events, branded up as the Bright Stars Scholarship challenge.

The DB team have been absolutely fantastic at our recent schools careers events. Katie, Dean and Becky have been efficient, friendly and very helpful. I thoroughly recommend them.

That was Lucy from Specsavers, after a season of those events.

Common Questions

How is this different from a traditional fairground Whack a Mole?

There are no mechanical moles. The targets are LED pads that light up at random, and you hit them with a foam hammer while an electronic scoreboard keeps count. Nothing pops up on a motor, so there's far less to jam or wear out over a long event, and the round length and sound can both be set to suit the venue.

Can we brand the whole cabinet for our campaign?

Yes. The panels lift off and take a full printed wrap from your artwork - front, sides and back - produced and fitted in-house. We've run it as Specsavers' Bright Stars Scholarship game, in Collect+ orange for a parcels activation, and as a Perfectly Clear flavoured-water unit, among others. Send us your logo or brand guidelines and we'll come back with options.

Is it the same game as Whack a Zombie and Smash a Snowman?

Yes - the same cabinet and the same game, with Halloween or Christmas graphics on the panels. If you're booking around a seasonal event, we'll send it out in the matching theme.

Does it need much power?

No. It runs off a single 13A socket and draws only 500W, and the built-in battery keeps it going while it charges. If there's no mains near your spot on the floor, we can add a generator to the quote.

We deliver regularly to NEC Birmingham, ExCeL London, Manchester Central, Coventry Arena and Leeds First Direct Arena, along with careers and freshers events at schools, colleges and universities across the country. Europe-wide delivery is available for larger packages.

Whack a Mole sits well next to the other reaction games on a stand. It works alongside the Batak, Strike a Light and Beat the Buzzer for a competitive corner, and a magnetic leaderboard keeps the scores up where players can see them. For a full exhibition games or interactive games package we can quote delivery, staffing and branding together, and the lot goes out on one delivery with one invoice.
