Whack a Mole game branded in Specsavers artwork at a careers event

Open Days & Recruitment Fairs

We help you get a sixteen-year-old or a final-year student to walk over and start talking, in a sports hall with eighty other tables in it.

The audience is the hard part

Careers fairs and open days have a particular problem. The people you want to talk to are usually in groups, they are usually self-conscious, and approaching a table on their own in front of their mates is exactly what they are trying to avoid. A stand with a leaflet and a person behind it asks them to do the one thing they don't want to do.

A game removes that. It gives somebody a reason to come over that isn't "I am interested in a career with you", and it gives them cover, because they can bring two friends and pretend they only came for a go on the thing. The conversation you actually want happens about ninety seconds later, while they are waiting for their score.

We do a fair bit of this work. Specsavers have run branded games at their schools careers events, and we supplied a fully branded Whack a Mole to an early-careers recruitment event at TECA in Aberdeen.

What the setting demands

Three things separate a careers fair from a trade show stand.

  • It has to work for a group

Head-to-head and four-player games do better than solo ones, because nobody has to step forward alone. A leaderboard between two schools or two halls of residence will run itself all day.

  • Halls have awkward access

Sports halls, refectories and atriums mean lifts, thresholds and floor protection rather than a loading bay. Tell us the route in and we will pick kit that gets down it.

  • Safeguarding and paperwork get checked

Schools and universities ask for documentation earlier and read it more carefully than most corporate clients, so we send it up front rather than waiting to be chased.

What gets booked for these

These are quick and competitive, and most of them give somebody a photo worth keeping. Prices start at £245.

Content that leaves with them

Photo booths do a job leaflets can't

A prospectus goes in a bag and then a bin. A photo with your branding on the print, or a boomerang that goes straight to somebody's story, leaves the building on the phone of the person you were trying to reach and then gets shown to their friends.

We run branded backdrops and print templates for these, and the social media booth will send to a phone as well as printing. For welcome weeks and freshers' events the sharing matters more than the print. For schools work the print usually matters more, because it ends up on a fridge where a parent sees it.

Universities, welcome weeks and student unions

Freshers' events are their own thing and we have a category for the kit that suits them, because the volume is different. An open day is a few hundred people across a morning. A welcome week is thousands over several days, and the kit has to take that without a service visit halfway through.

We have supplied Sheffield Hallam Sports Park since 2019 for university sport and Yorkshire Sport Foundation events, normally as staging and PA with MC support rather than games. Hull Sport have used us for engagement events, family fun days and university welcome week.

Staffing

This is the one we would push you on. At a corporate exhibition, letting your own team run the game is usually fine. At a careers fair your team are the entire reason you are there, and every minute one of them spends resetting a game is a minute they are not talking to a candidate. Our staff can run the kit so yours stay free.

What people say

Lucy K, Early Careers Manager at Specsavers, said the team "have been absolutely fantastic at our recent schools careers events". Another client who hired us to engage students said all our staff were "helpful, professional and catered for our specific requirements", and Ryan H described us as an "excellent company for a school rewards event".

Tell us about the event

Dates, venue and rough attendance are enough to start with. If you need documentation for a safeguarding or estates sign-off, say so and we will send it with the quote. The office number is 0845 468 0590.
