Four players each take hold of a reindeer-headed pole - colour-coded blue, yellow, red and green, one per lane - and pump it up and down to race. Each movement feeds through electronically to the table-height display, where reindeer cutout figures move along a green-felt racecourse toward the FINISH line. The quicker you pump, the faster yours moves.

Races are over in a couple of minutes, so plenty of people get a go across a session, and the noise tends to pull a crowd. People who aren't playing end up stood round the fence shouting for a colour before the first race has finished, which is why it gets booked as the centrepiece at office Christmas parties, hotel party nights and after-dinner wedding entertainment more often than as a side activity. We've run it at corporate events, trade fairs and school Christmas parties, and it does its job in most indoor rooms where there's space for people to stand round it.

A trained operator is included in the hire for up to three hours and manages all the game running, so your guests aren't left to man it themselves. Safety mats are provided for the play area. The track display sits inside a white picket fence surround with full Reindeer Racing branding, and the 12ft x 8ft footprint fits into most function rooms without rearranging much.

You'll also see this game described as Racing Reindeer or Gold Cup Reindeer Racing, because it's the reindeer-themed version of the classic Gold Cup horse racing game. This is the hobby horse variant - if you'd rather the roll-and-bowl Donkey Derby style, that's our Roll a Ball Reindeer Racing.

Size

The complete dressed unit is 10ft long, 6ft deep and 7ft high, including the picket fence and backdrop. That's roughly 3m x 1.8m x 2.1m.

Set aside a 12ft x 8ft operating area with 7ft of headroom so the four players and operator can stand around it comfortably. The route from the unloading point needs to stay at least 2.6ft wide.

Full £5 million public liability insurance comes as standard, with indemnity to principal cover when our staff are supplied, and risk assessments and method statements are emailed to you or your venue before the event.

The game lives at our own 25,000 sq ft warehouse in Rotherham, five minutes off the M1, M18 and A1, and we've been hiring games like this out since 1999. Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, Barnsley, Worksop and Chesterfield are on the doorstep, along with nearby East Midlands dates. The £499 starting price is subject to VAT at 20%. A minimum spend may apply depending on your event location; we'll confirm it on the quote.

Common questions

Is this the same game as Roll a Ball Reindeer Racing?

No. This is the hobby horse version - you take a reindeer-headed pole and pump it up and down to drive your cutout reindeer along the tabletop track. Roll a Ball Reindeer Racing is the Donkey Derby style game, where you roll or bounce balls into scoring holes to move your reindeer instead. We hire both, and both can come to the same event.

How much space does it need, and will it fit through the doors?

The dressed setup with picket fence and backdrop is 10ft x 6ft, and you'll want a 12ft x 8ft footprint once players and the operator are stood round it. The 2.6ft access width gets it through most single doors. If your venue has steps, a lift or a long carry, mention it when you enquire and we'll plan the load in around it.

Can Reindeer Racing go outside?

Only under cover. It's an indoor game: the sound and timing box runs off a mains socket, and the mats and track need to stay dry. If you need it outside, tell us about the site and we'll confirm a marquee or gazebo large enough to cover the full 12ft x 8ft operating area.
