Snow that falls from above

This is a professional Antari snow machine - the S-500-spec unit used for town-centre light switch-ons and theatre productions - and it works differently from the small boxes that sit on a stage corner. The machine stays on the ground in its wheeled flight case, with the tank and controls where they're easy to reach. A 10-metre hose runs up to a lightweight nozzle, and that's the part you rig: over a doorway, a stage, a stand entrance or the town Christmas tree. The snow then falls from overhead, the way real snow does.

Because only the nozzle goes up, nobody has to hoist a machine onto a truss, and the tank can be topped up mid-event without touching the rigging. You'll also see this kind of kit listed as a snow machine, an artificial snow machine or a snowfall machine - it's the same thing whichever name you search.

Turn the snow up or down

The output is adjustable, from a light flurry that drifts down while people take photos to a full blizzard for the finale. Flake size and airflow are adjustable too, so the effect can be tuned to the space - softer flakes under a covered entrance, heavier snowfall across an open square. At full output the machine puts out 400 ml of artificial snow a minute, and the 20-litre tank gives you about 50 minutes of heavy snowfall before it needs a refill.

That covers most switch-on ceremonies and reveal moments on one tank. Spare fluid is £12 for 5 litres if you want it running longer.

The case rolls on castors, so it can sit tucked out of the way while the nozzle does the work up high. Tell us where you want the snow falling and what there is to rig from - truss, gantry or scaffolding bar - and we'll confirm the setup before the day.

A day's hire starts at £495 plus VAT, and keeping the machine overnight is an extra £25. Extra snow fluid is £12 per 5 litres. If there is no mains power at the site, we can quote a 6kVA diesel generator to run it.

Delivered from our own warehouse

We have been hiring out event equipment from Rotherham since 1999 and hold the snow machine in our 25,000 sq ft warehouse, five minutes from the A1, M1 and M18. It's our own kit, maintained in-house, and our own team delivers and collects it. Through the winter season we're regulars at NEC Birmingham, ExCeL London and Manchester Central, and we deliver nationwide for single items as well as full event packages.

Snow machine questions

Does the whole machine have to be rigged up high?

No. The machine sits on the ground in its wheeled flight case and only the lightweight nozzle goes up, on the end of a 10-metre hose. The weight stays at floor level, the tank and controls can be reached mid-event, and the rigging point only has to carry the nozzle.

How long does a tank of fluid last?

At full blizzard output the 20-litre tank gives about 50 minutes of heavy snowfall, and the run stretches out at lower settings. Most switch-on and reveal moments use less than a full tank. Extra fluid comes in 5-litre cans if you want it running longer.

Can the snow machine be used indoors?

No. The snow is a fluid-based foam that settles where it lands, and this machine is for outdoor use only. Entrance steps, market squares and open-air stages are the usual spots.

What power does the snow machine need?

One standard mains socket. The unit is rated at around 900W, so a normal socket on the venue supply or a small generator covers it.
