20ft inflatable Father Christmas sky dancer waving beside Christmas selfie boards at a school event

Santa Sky Dancer

Hire from £75.

What it is

The Santa Sky Dancer is a 20ft inflatable Father Christmas that waves and flails above your event, powered by a high-pressure blower that forces air up through the fabric tube. It is the same thing you have seen outside car showrooms and supermarkets - only this one is Santa-shaped, bright red with white trim, a printed face and a black belt with a gold buckle. You will also hear it called an air dancer, an inflatable tube man, a wacky waving Santa, or just the big red Santa out front.

It works because it moves. The fabric collapses and re-inflates in the air stream, so the arms are always in a different position, and from a distance it looks like a giant Father Christmas dancing above the roofline. At night it glows bright red under external lighting, which turns it into a beacon you can spot from well down the street.

We have been hiring Christmas props and inflatables from our Rotherham warehouse since 1999, five minutes from the M1, and this is one of the simpler bits of kit we send out - the blower goes on the floor, the Santa attaches to the top, and it is waving within a minute of plugging it in.

Where it goes

The Santa Sky Dancer is mainly an outdoor piece. It sits on the forecourt of a shopping centre, at the entrance to a Christmas market, in a town square outside the church, or on the industrial estate next to the company marquee. The blower fan hums away at ground level and the Santa does the work of telling people something is happening.

You can use it indoors if the hall is tall enough - you need about 22ft of ceiling clearance, which rules out most village halls but works fine in exhibition centres and sports arenas. The blower noise is similar to a bouncy castle fan, so it is better suited to large open spaces where the sound dissipates.

We have delivered these to school Christmas fairs, town centre light switch-ons, corporate festive parties, retail park promotions and shopping centre grottos. The photo in the gallery showing it outside Swinton Community Focus Group is a typical setup - banner at the base, Santa waving above, people stopping to look.

How It Works on the Day

Setup takes a few minutes - the blower goes on a flat surface, the fabric tube attaches to the collar on top, and the fan inflates it immediately. There is no warm-up time. When you are finished, we switch it off, the Santa collapses into a fabric bundle, and we pack it away.

The fabric is built for outdoor use and stands up to light rain, though the blower unit itself needs to stay dry, so we bring a cover if the forecast is bad. In high winds we may add extra ballast or advise repositioning - the tube is basically a big sail, so it needs to be anchored properly.

Common Questions

Can the Santa Sky Dancer go indoors?

Yes, but you need around 22ft of ceiling height to clear the 20ft inflatable plus a bit of movement. It works well in exhibition halls, sports arenas and large function rooms, but most standard hotel conference suites and village halls do not have the headroom. The blower noise is comparable to a bouncy castle fan, so large open spaces are better than small enclosed rooms.

What happens if it rains or gets windy?

The inflatable fabric itself is weather-resistant and fine in light rain, but the electric blower at the base must stay dry, so we bring a cover if needed. In high winds the tube acts like a sail, so we anchor it with stakes on grass or sandbags on hard standing. If the weather is genuinely unsafe we will advise moving it to shelter or switching it off until conditions improve.

How long does setup take, and does it need supervision?

A few minutes - the blower sits on the ground, the fabric tube clips onto the collar, and it inflates straight away. It does not need a dedicated attendant during the event; it just runs plugged in. We set it up, show you the on/off switch, and collect it at the end of the hire period.
