Retractable belt barriers for queue management - the posts you'll recognise from airport check-ins, box offices and exhibition entrances. These are QueueWay Economy posts, made by Tensator, and they're what people mean when they ask us for a tensa barrier, a stretch barrier, a belt barrier or a queue stanchion. They're all the same thing.

Each post has around 2m of retractable webbing that clips into the next post to form a lane. There's a built-in braking system so the belt draws back slowly rather than snapping, and a locking tape end so it can't be pulled loose by accident. Posts come in black or a mirror-effect chrome finish, so you can match them to a reception, a stand or a stage front.

From £7.50 per post per week, dropping to £3.75 each once you're into the larger numbers. Minimum hire is 10 posts, and we keep a lot of these in the warehouse ready to go out same day or next day.

Good to know

QueueWay Economy posts are built for indoor queue management - foyers, halls, reception areas and any flat, hard floor. The weighted base keeps them steady on smooth surfaces and the rubber floor protector stops them marking the floor.

They're not the ones for holding back a crowd outdoors in the wind - for that we'd point you at our metal crowd control barriers instead. If you're not sure which suits the job, tell us what you're setting up and we'll say which way to go.

Bulk and long-term hire

The more posts you take, the cheaper each one gets. These are the rates for a one-week hire:

For longer jobs the price drops again - from as little as £3 per post per week on a 13-week hire. Delivery charges may apply depending on the venue and the numbers. We can hire or buy, and we deliver in our own vehicles with our own team, so there's no third-party courier in the mix when a run needs to be on site for a certain time.

Which locations do we cover?

We've been hiring out event kit from our 25,000 sq ft warehouse near Sheffield since 1999, five minutes from the M1, so we're well placed for same-day, next-day or booked-in delivery across the UK. Belt barriers go out to exhibition and reception jobs all over - the big venues included, like the NEC in Birmingham, ExCeL London and Manchester Central.

Everything goes out with £5 million public liability cover as standard, and we can email risk assessments and method statements to you or your venue before the day rather than turning up with them. We own around 95% of our kit and look after it in-house, which is part of why we can put large numbers of matching posts out at short notice - Amazon among them, where our posts have set out the queue lanes at one of their sites.

Common questions

What finishes do the posts and belts come in?

The posts come in black or a mirror-effect chrome, and we hold belts in red and black. Let us know the look you're after when you enquire and we'll set aside a matching set.

How does the belt retract safely?

There's a built-in braking system so the webbing draws back slowly instead of snapping shut, and a locking tape end so the belt can't be pulled free by accident once it's clipped into the next post.

Can I use these outdoors?

They're built for indoor queue management and need a flat, hard floor - the weighted base keeps them steady but they're not made to hold a crowd outdoors in the wind. For outdoor work our metal crowd control barriers are the better fit.

Is there a minimum number I can hire?

Yes, the minimum hire is 10 posts. Prices drop as the numbers go up, from £7.50 each down to £3.75 each on the larger runs, and we keep plenty in stock for short-notice bookings.
